The Challenge

A state based Taft Hartley organization with several thousand members was struggling with rising costs. Healthcare costs are paid for by the members from their dues. The hard working front line workers would be hard pressed to pay more. In addition, the union leadership wanted to provide important new benefits to its members to enhance the attractiveness of the union and grow its membership.

The Solution

This Taft Hartley group had heard about Activate Healthcare from other union organizations that spoke highly of the cost savings and the benefits for its members.

Activate Healthcare leadership then spent time to understand the unique needs of the members in this organization. Activate Healthcare worked with union leadership to map all of the working locations of its members and together choose the ideal location for clinic. With about 4000 members, this clinic required two full medical teams (two physicians, two nurse practitioner/coaches, and four medical assistants.) This organization also had a large Burmese speaking population so the team also hired a full-time Burmese translator already well respected in the community. Other staff were specifically recruited to help with the Hispanic-speaking population. All staff were interviewed by the union leadership and some front line members to ensure that they would connect well with the community. Hours were tailored to fit the needs of the working members.

The clinic was launched with a comprehensive effort to reach all working members in small groups and all spouses with direct mail and other outreach efforts. The medical team and Activate leadership meets with the union leadership monthly to review clinic results, patient progress and to continuously fine tune the approach of the clinic.

The Results

Participation among working members has been over 70%, which was higher than expected given that members work across 5+ counties. The key average biometric results improved significantly in all major categories. Key measures of chronic disease management have improved. The union has saved over $8 million versus their expected trend in two years. For every $1.00 invested in Activate Healthcare the organization has received back $2.50.

Equally important, the members are delighted with the new service.
